Election judges

To serve as an election judge you must:

  • Be a United States citizen.
  • Be at least 18 years old by election day (or 15 years old if serving as a student judge).
  • Agree to a Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) background check and have never been convicted of any election offense or fraud.
  • Be physically and mentally able to perform and complete the assigned tasks.
  • Complete the paperwork, orientation, and 4-8 hours of paid election training.
  • Not have a family member (to the 2nd degree) on the ballot.
  • Be a registered elector in the state of Colorado.

There are a variety of opportunities available:

  • Early voting and election day voter service and polling center (VSPC) judges

    • Offer a variety of voter services – including updating voter registrations, issuing replacement ballots, and assisting voters who wish to vote on the ballot marking device
    • Assist with closing of the polls on election day and clean-up of the VSPC
  • Signature verification judges

    • Compare the signature on returned ballot envelopes to signatures on voter’s record.
    • Requires basic computer skills.
  • Mail ballot judges

    • Remove ballots from envelopes and prepare ballots for scanning.
  • Ballot pick up team

    • A bipartisan team of judges who drive a county vehicle between Carbondale and Parachute collecting ballots from drop boxes and voter service and polling centers.
    • Must have a valid Colorado driver’s license and proof of insurance (to prove that you are insurable)
  • Health care facility judges (2 days only)

    • Deliver ballots to residents of health care facilities and assist them in voting (if requested).

Compensation and other information

  • Election Judges are paid an hourly rate. Rates may vary depending on job functions and experience.
  • All VSPC judges (early voting and election day) must attend 4 to 8 hours of in-person training.
  • Signature verification and select VSPC judges are required to take additional training (online) provided by the Secretary of State.
  • All trainings are paid.
  • Arrange your own transportation to and from your work location.
  • Provide your own meals/beverages for your shift. One meal will be provided on election day.
  • Be prepared to stay during your assigned hours, including training. Judges are not allowed to leave until the polls close unless prior arrangements have been made with the County Clerk.
