BOCC approves fourth-quarter discretionary grants

Garfield County has announced the recipients of its fourth-quarter Board of County Commissioners discretionary grants. Eight local nonprofits received a combined $30,100 in grants out of $40,800 that was remaining for the year.

The Glenwood Springs Downtown Market was awarded $600 toward the cost of Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) funds ($280) used this summer to reimburse vendors that accepted the cards plus Double-Up Bucks. The market also received a separate grant for $3,500 toward winter offerings, including this year’s “A Grand Holiday,” which features live reindeer, Santa Claus, hot chocolate, live music and more on Dec. 10.

Symphony in the Valley received $5,000 to support two new student enrichments programs and to help fund its orchestral music in the community. The Western Garfield County Chamber of Commerce also received $5,000 toward its Hometown Holiday, Dec. 3-4, in Rifle. The event features fireworks, a parade of lights, Santa’s workshop, a craft fair and more.

The Bookcliffs Art Center is the recipient of $5,000 toward its operations and event expenses; Colorado River Board of Cooperative Education Services (BOCES) was awarded $5,000 toward internships and training for local high school students; Yampah Mountain High School received $1,000 for its outdoor education program benefitting at-risk students; and COVENTURE was granted $5,000 toward mentoring, programming and resources for businesses and enterprises in the Rifle area.

The fourth-quarter discretionary grants were approved unanimously, 3-0.
