First-quarter discretionary grant recipients announced

County grants $31,000 to local nonprofits; $89,000 remains for grant cycles in 2024

Garfield County has approved seven discretionary grant requests totaling $31,000 for local nonprofits that help improve the community. The grant requests are capped at $5,000 apiece and are available to area nonprofits, which are eligible to receive one discretionary grant per year.

Recipients of nonprofit grants include:

  • Colorado Mountain College, which received $2,500 in funding to support a nontraditional scholarship for older students.
  • KSUN community radio received $5,000 toward improvements to the station’s antenna, including additional wiring and wattage, stabilization, and a back-up transmitter.
  • The Lower Valley Trail Association (LoVa) was granted $5,000 for planning, operations, grant-writing, and outreach to expand the regional trails system.
  • The Rifle Rendezvous received $5,000 toward partnering with local talent to bring a motorsports element to the annual event, as well as support of local youth groups.
  • Roaring Fork Leadership was granted $5,000 to support both existing and new programs addressing leadership, workforce, and citizen skill gaps.
  • Glenwood Summer of Music received $5,000 toward its annual summer music series in Two Rivers Park.
  • West Elk Trails was granted $3,500 for marking, maintaining, and promotion of trails north of New Castle off the Buford-New Castle Road.

    • The grants were approved unanimously, 2-0, with Commissioner Tom Jankovsky excused from the meeting. The county had budgeted $120,000 for nonprofit discretionary grants for 2024.
