County announces discretionary grant awardees

Local nonprofits received $27,000 in funding in the second quarter of 2024

PRESS RELEASE
May 14, 2024

Garfield County has approved $27,000 in second-quarter discretionary grants for local nonprofits, out of $33,000 requested in applications. The Board of County Commissioners had budgeted $120,000 for nonprofit discretionary grants for 2024, leaving $62,000 remaining for applications in the final two quarters of this year.

Recipients of the nonprofit discretionary grants include:
• Glenwood Springs High School Mock Trial, which received $5,000 toward attending a national competition this month in Wilmington, DE, and flights and hotel costs for the world championships in Chicago this fall.
• Roaring Fork Youth Orchestra, which received $5,000 for teaching youth, ages 5 to 18, to play and perform free public music in the region.
• Bookcliffs Council on the Arts and Humanities (Bookcliffs Art Center), which received $5,000 toward operations, including maintenance for its gallery and community gardens.
• The New Ute Theatre Society, which was granted $5,000 for its programming (music, theatre, dance, and crafts) and cost of rent.
• Roaring Fork Conservancy, which received $5,000 toward its water-quality monitoring of Cattle Creek near Glenwood Springs, and costs of producing a report on its findings.
• Glenwood Springs Middle School, which was awarded $2,000 for scholarships supporting an 8th grade trip to Puerto Rico for students from Glenwood Springs, Carbondale, Basalt, and Aspen.

“I think we’ve done a pretty good job of trying to help out all we can,” said Commissioner Mike Samson. “I think we’ve been prudent in how we spend these funds and I think we’ve done a lot of good for a lot of young people in Garfield County.”

The board approved the grants unanimously, 3-0.
