Garfield County awards first-quarter discretionary grants

County fund has $87,000 remaining for 2019 quarterly grant requests

GARFIELD COUNTY, Colo. – Garfield County has awarded $23,000 in grants from its discretionary grant fund to local nonprofits. Organizations made presentations before the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) last week in requesting grant funds.

Discretionary grant awards are capped at $5,000, and nonprofit organizations can apply for these funds quarterly. This year, $120,000 is allocated toward such requests through the county’s nonprofit discretionary fund.

The first-quarter grant awards were presented to West Elk Trails for maintenance of Nordic ski and snowshoe trails near New Castle ($2,500); the Citizen Washington Focus trip, which is bringing eight local students to the nation’s capital June 30 to July 6 ($4,000); the 4-H Summer Outbound International Exchange for a local student to travel to Japan for 8 weeks to learn the culture and language ($1,000); the Garfield County Shooting Sports Council to support a local 4-H member’s trip to participate in the 2019 4-H national Shooting Sports Contest in Nebraska ($1,000); the Sopris Barracudas for new swim blocks for the kids swim team ($3,000); St. Stephen Catholic Church to help fund a trip to Washington D.C. for seventh- and eighth-grade students ($4,000); the Carbondale Wild West Rodeo Association for upgrades and improvements to its facility in Carbondale ($5,000); and the Northwest Colorado Cultural Heritage Program to support development and programming ($2,500).

Many of the nonprofit organizations are raising matching funds or augmenting the county’s grants with privately donated resources. Not all grant recipients receive the full amount requested.

Last week, the BOCC awarded $5,000 from its discretionary grant fund to Youthentity as part of an overall $15,000 grant to the nonprofit. Another $5,000 from the same fund was awarded to the Northwest Small Business Development Corporation in January.

The board also approved $10,000 out of its nonprofit general fund to KSUN community radio for equipment upgrades.

All the grant awards were approved unanimously, 3-0. The discretionary grant fun has $87,000 remaining to cover requests in the second, third, and fourth quarters of this year.
