County approves $16,500 in discretionary grants

Parachute transit receives $250,000 grant for public bus service

Garfield County has awarded $16,500 in discretionary grants for the third quarter for qualifying nonprofits in the area. The board budgeted $120,000 for discretionary grants in 2022, and $10,000 remains for fourth-quarter requests.

The Colorado River Valley Chamber of Commerce was awarded $5,000 toward marketing efforts and venue costs for the 43rd annual Chili Cook-off;  Roaring Fork Public Radio (Aspen Public Radio) was awarded $1,000 toward efforts to better serve the Spanish-speaking community; Colorado Mountain College Foundation was granted $2,000 toward hosting the Colorado League high school state mountain biking championship at the Spring Valley campus in October; the Glenwood Springs Art Council received $2,000 for expansion of its culinary arts festival; the GlenX Career Expo was awarded $2,500 toward its fall event in Rifle; the Glenwood Springs Youth Hockey Association (Grizzly hockey) received $2,000 toward its scholarship program; and Dance Initiative was granted $2,000 for its free school dance program.

The board also approved $15,000 from the Board of County Commissioner grant fund for the 5Point Adventure Film Festival toward its programming, and $250,000 for the Parachute Area Transit System (PATS), which provides a public connection between Parachute, Battlement Mesa, and Rifle. Both the 5Point and PATS grants had been budgeted for in advance.

All grants were awarded unanimously, 3-0.
