County awards second-quarter discretionary funds

Garfield County has awarded $46,000 in second quarter discretionary grants to local nonprofit organizations. The nonprofits had requested $59,000 in grants; a total of $120,000 was allocated for discretionary funds in 2022, and each request is capped at $5,000. All told, 14 nonprofits made grant requests before the Board of County Commissioners.

Nonprofits receiving grant funding include the Rifle Rendezvous ($5,000 toward the event and efforts to engage youth in western heritage); West Elk Loop Scenic and Historic Byway steering committee ($500 toward maintenance of informative exhibits and production of brochures); New Ute Theater Society ($4,000 for offering programming in the arts and rental assistance for nonprofits utilizing the venue); Glenwood Downtown Market and Music Series ($3,000 to help pay workers from Feed My Sheep, which sets up and breaks down the events); Ambleside School Rocky Mountains ($4,000 for rehabilitation efforts at the school); Andy Zanca Youth Empowerment Program ($4,000 toward youth radio programs for students); Glenwood Springs Summer of Music ($4,000 toward its annual concert series); Grand Valley Parks Association ($4,000 to help fund Grand Valley Days 2022); Roaring Fork Youth Orchestra ($4,000 for support and expansion of the program, which provides affordable musical instruction for area youth and free performances in the community); Roaring Fork Conservancy ($3,000 for local water-quality monitoring); Colorado Mountain College Foundation ($2,500 toward sponsorships for nontraditional students); Colorado Mountain College ($4,000 toward scholarships, supplies, and instruction for summer STEM camp); Lower Valley Trail Association ($4,000 toward regional trails planning and expansion).

The Western Slope Veterans Coalition was awarded a $5,000 grant toward services and assistance for local veterans out of the county’s Human Services Commission grant fund.

The second-quarter awards leave $34,000 in the discretionary fund for third- and fourth-quarter requests. More information can be found at garfield-county.com/board-commissioners/. The grant awards were approved unanimously, 3-0.
