Garfield County website switching to .gov
New government domain coming online in March, enhancing security and authenticity
PRESS RELEASE
January 31, 2025
FIRST RELEASE: January 31,2025, REMINDER: February 20, 2025; SECOND REMINDER February 28, 2025
Garfield County is moving toward shifting its website domain from .com to .gov, clarifying its status as an official government website. Once the switch is completed, the public can access the county website at garfieldcountyco.gov.
The .gov domain is only available to U.S.-based governmental organizations, such as federal, state, and municipal governments, as well as police and fire departments, and sheriff’s offices. The move to .gov reassures customers that they are on the correct website and haven’t clicked to a fraudulent site.
According to the Colorado Statewide Internet Portal Authority (SIPA), “web browsers know to only connect to .gov websites with encryption. This helps protect all interactions with government services by default.”
Staff email addresses are changing to the new domain, but both the new and old contact emails will still work for an extended period. If you already have a staff member’s email, simply apply the new domain (garfieldcountyco.gov) after the @ and the email will reach the correct employee. Contact forms are also available on the website for each department and office to reach staff.
Updates and more information are available on garfield-county.com until the switch and on garfieldcountyco.gov thereafter.

New government domain coming online in March, enhancing security and authenticity
PRESS RELEASE
February 20, 2025
In the coming weeks, Garfield County is shifting its website domain from .com to .gov, clarifying its status as an official government website. Once the switch is completed, the public can access the county website at garfieldcountyco.gov. The change to a .gov helps differentiate the county from other “Garfield County” websites in other states, such as Oklahoma and Washington.
The .gov domain is only available to U.S.-based governmental organizations, such as federal, state, and municipal governments, as well as police and fire departments, and sheriff’s offices. The move to .gov reassures customers that they are on the correct website and haven’t clicked to a fraudulent site.
Both the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) have recommended all government agencies switch to .gov for greater security in mitigating impersonation and cybersecurity risks.
“Unlike other domains, .gov is only available to official U.S.-based government organizations and publicly controlled entities. This means that users visiting a .gov website or receiving an email from a .gov email address can be more confident that the content is genuine government information,” the FBI and CISA have reported. “Similarly, use of the .gov domain can help the public better recognize official government sites and emails while avoiding phishing attempts and websites that impersonate government officials.”
Multi-factor authentication is enforced on all .gov websites and all web browsers are required to use the secure HTTPS connection, protecting the visitor’s privacy and ensuring the integrity of all content, the agencies added.
Garfield County is shifting to the new domain name on or around March 1, 2025. Staff email addresses are changing to the new domain, but both the new and old contact emails will still work for an extended period. If you already have a staff member’s email, simply apply the new domain (garfieldcountyco.gov) after the @ and the email will go through. Contact forms are also available on the website for each department and office if anyone needs to reach staff.
Updates and more information is available on garfield-county.com through February 28, 2025, and on garfieldcountyco.gov thereafter.
