According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), living in a home with Colorado’s average radon level (6.4 picocuries per liter or pCi/L) is equivalent to taking 200 chest X-rays a year. Mosquitoes in a Rifle testing area have turned up positive for West Nile virus. This the second site in Garfield County to test positive, after mosquitoes in Battlement Mesa were identified a week earlier. There have not been any human cases of West Nile reported in Garfield County so far this year. As of August 28, the state has reported 30 human cases of the virus, 12 hospitalizations, and two deaths. West Nile is transmitted via the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquito testing and mitigation efforts occur throughout Garfield County in the summer, but additional personal precautions are needed

Occasionally, a solitary bat will fly into a home, garage, or other building through an open door or window. Not all bats carry rabies, but it is best to use caution anytime you are around bats. Rabies is a deadly virus that spreads to people from the saliva of infected animals. It is nearly 100 percent preventable if medical care is received quickly. Untreated rabies infects the brain and results in death. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) has launched a new program to help determine what types of ticks exist in the different regions of the state. Cataloging the creepy crawlers will help state entomologists better understand the risks of diseases that ticks can carry. Mosquitoes are an annual annoyance and no one loves getting bit. In Colorado, some mosquitoes carry the West Nile virus, a rare but serious illness. The virus circulates in sick birds in late June to early September. It is transmitted to people when Culex tarsalis mosquitos bite an infected bird and then bite a person. Areas around the Colorado River Valley have had higher numbers of Culex mosquitos. Garfield County reports weekly trapping and testing results to assess mosquito risk. Most people show no symptoms, but in rare cases, the virus can cause serious brain infections. There is no vaccine

Coloradans have experienced seasonal hot days and extreme heat events for decades. However, as temperatures increase and heat waves last longer, and become more frequent and dangerous, communities must plan when these events occur. Heat is the leading cause of weather-related deaths in the U.S., however, not all hot days rise to the level of extreme heat. Garfield County Public Health is monitoring an avian influenza outbreak that is killing poultry and several other species of animals around the United States. Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) spreads between wild water birds, such as ducks, geese, and swans. When these infected birds or their excrement or saliva are around domestic animals, such as chickens, turkeys, or cows, they can pass the virus. It is not clear how cows, specifically dairy cows, have been contracting the virus from birds. Hantavirus is a rare, life-threatening infection that is transmitted when humans breathe in particles from deer mice urine, droppings, or saliva. Take caution when “spring cleaning” to avoid aerosolizing these particles if you see evidence of mice. Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and California are hot spots for infected mice. Pertussis continues to spread in Garfield County, which now has 11 confirmed cases since October 2023. The illness is circulating throughout Colorado, but most of the Western Slope cases have occurred in Garfield County. “This recent outbreak has involved more cases than we have seen in the past five years,” said Rachel Forsyth, Garfield County Public Health nurse. “It is likely that pertussis is also occurring in other places, but they are not identifying it. Public health has recently confirmed multiple cases of pertussis, which is commonly known as “whooping cough.” The illness is often recognized as a cough that persists for two weeks or longer. The disease can be severe and even fatal for infants under a year, or individuals with risk factors such as neuro-muscular diseases, lung and immune disorders, or who are pregnant, or not up to date on vaccine. Garfield County Public Health is gearing up for flu season with an eye on COVID and other infectious diseases appearing in the area. Garfield County Public Health Deputy Director Sara Brainard told the Board of County Commissioners that flu vaccination season is one of the busiest times of the year for the department, and that walk-in vaccination clinics are beginning for the community. The type of mosquito that carries West Nile is typically active from June through early September. This summer, mosquito populations are higher than average, making it even more important to practice the 4-Ds of prevention: Drain standing water, limit outdoor activity at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active, use insect repellents containing DEET, and dress in long sleeves and pants during dusk and dawn. Rising temperatures and higher than normal moisture levels in Garfield County this year mean we are experiencing high levels of mosquito activity that may be with us for the next six to eight weeks. Back-to-school vaccinations Make sure students are up to date on their vaccinations. Children are generally due for shots at four to six years of age, 11 years, and 16 to 18 years. Ask your primary care provider or Garfield County Public Health if you and your child are due for vaccines. COVID-19 and schools Students no longer have to stay home if exposed to someone with COVID. However, if your child is sick (with any illness) keep them home.

Symptoms to watch for and who is prioritized for vaccine and treatment There is one confirmed case of monkeypox in Garfield County. The risk to the general community is low. Garfield County Public Health staff is working to reduce the risk of transmission through awareness and education efforts. If you think or know you have been exposed to monkeypox, contact a health care provider as soon as possible as they can determine if you are eligible for vaccine and treatment, which work best if administered early. Garfield County continues to see a decline in overall COVID cases. Daily cases have decreased from a height of 293 cases mid-January, to 50 cases per day. There are seven current COVID outbreaks within congregate housing sites in the county. Sixteen people were hospitalized from Jan. 28 – Feb. 4. Nationally, there has been a 27 percent increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations, with Colorado experiencing a 16 percent increase. Garfield County moves to Level Yellow; 5 Star program information awaiting clarification

The state officially moved Garfield County to Level Yellow on the COVID-19 Dial due to a surge in COVID cases with levels similar to July. The number of COVID cases and the cumulative incidence rate have increased over the past two weeks. Multiple days have had an incidence rate 15% over the Level Yellow threshold which is 100 cases or less per 100,000 people. The state of Colorado has approved changes to its COVID dial, easing many restrictions on businesses and making it easier for counties to reach the least restrictive green level, known as “Protect Our Neighbors.” Garfield County is currently at level Blue on the new dial. The changes in Dial 3.0, which is now in effect, remove most restrictions at the green level. Counties now qualify for Green automatically with a seven-day incidence level of 35 cases of COVID-19 per 100,000, up from 15 per 100,000 under Dial 2.0. Garfield County Public Health has confirmed five COVID-19 related deaths in Garfield County. The individuals passed away between the second week of November and the first week of December. Two individuals a male and a female in their early sixties, a male in his mid-seventies, and a male and a female in their nineties died in Garfield County from COVID-19 related illness. The individuals were not related. Five additional deaths are currently pending investigation for COVID-19 by the Garfield County Coroner. County requests to keep state COVID dial at yellow

Garfield County has asked the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) to remain at the moderate yellow level of its COVID-19 dial amid increasing cases in the county. Garfield County enacts emergency declaration Garfield County has declared a local disaster emergency in wake of the COVID-19 virus spread affecting Colorado and the rest of the world. Seasonal bat activity increases threat of rabies

GARFIELD COUNTY, CO – Garfield County commissioners today received the results of a human health risk assessment of air quality, showing a decreasing potential for cancer risk and non-cancer risk over the years 2008-12. UPDATE November 14, 2013 Garfield County Public Health is reporting 26 reported cases of pertussis in 2013, the last being at the end of September. Cases ranged in age from 1 year to 38 years and were distributed throughout the county. It is very important for children to get the required Tdap immunization at age 11. GARFIELD COUNTY, CO – As part of Garfield County’s ongoing tamarisk and Russian olive removal project, a prescribed burn is planned Thursday, March 7, and possibly, Friday, March 8, near the entrance to Rifle. The burns will occur, weather conditions permitting, on the two-acre island in the Colorado River located just east of the Highway 13 Bridge. Smoke may be visible to residents in the Rifle area and travelers along Interstate 70. Health officials announced Wednesday that a western Garfield County resident near the Mesa County line has been diagnosed with hantavirus infection. Hantavirus infections occur yearly in Colorado and have occurred on the Western Slope in the past. The last human case of hantavirus in Garfield County was in 2006. While hantavirus can be deadly, the adult who became ill in 2006 survived. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention there is a 38 percent mortality rate associated with hantavirus. Under an emergency measure, the Garfield County Board of Commissioners, using its statutory authority, waived a requirement to advertise bidding for three road projects, based on the need for immediate repairs for the safety of the traveling public. RIFLE–Local public health officials today announced a Garfield County resident has died from influenza – ”the first pediatric flu death in the state reported this flu season. The individual, whose name and age weren’t disclosed, died Monday, Jan. 17, according to Mary Meisner, director of the Garfield County Public Health Department. Officials said the individual was an adolescent and had been treated at St. Mary Hospital in Grand Junction. According to health officials, the individual did not have underlying health conditions that might have contributed to death. “The loss of any student is tragic, especially someone so young.” said Meisner.

“I wish I could rewind to before this nightmare began. The first thing I would do is get my children, my husband, and myself vaccinated against the flu,” said Regina Booth, who lost her 17-year old son, Austin, to complications from the flu in January of this year.
